My Coaching

If you’re over 40, you can still do bold, audacious things. Next 40 Coaching is here to help you do them.

I'm a 60-year-old, multi-distance runner and a UESCA-certified running coach. I welcome all comers over 40, newbies included. My coaching incorporates real-world, practical experience gained from running a wide range of distances—from 100 meters to 100 miles and everything in between. My marathons include London, Chicago, NYC (4 times), and Boston, among others. My ultra-distance races include 50k’s and 50 miles, and I’m currently working on 100 miles.

I’m also a board-certified physician, which I state not as a flex but a context. I'm informed by decades of professional experience helping people interpret what’s going on with their bodies. I understand physiology, and my training enables me to critically evaluate the latest trends in exercise science. As an athlete, I've had spectacular failures with self-coaching; I truly value a second opinion.

As a physician in my 60’s, I appreciate that everyone over 40 has something medical going on. Be it hypertension, osteopenia/osteoporosis, aging-related hormonal changes, residual injuries, or a cocktail of issues, medical conditions don't have to become barriers to progress. Together, we will set and achieve your running goals safely with a personalized plan, dynamic feedback, and accountability.

Let’s get started!

My Philosophy

Person wearing a red knit cap, sunglasses, and a gray textured long-sleeve shirt, holding a black object with white and black text in front of a clear blue sky.

When you run for exercise, you’re a runner. When you set an athletic goal and take it seriously, you’re an athlete.

When you work with me, I’m going to take your training seriously, too. And when other people start taking your training seriously, you change the way you think about yourself.

Narratives about aging can trap us in an “I can’t” mindset. I’m here to help you elevate your experience of yourself and what you are capable of as an over-40 athlete.

Your Assets

Being over 40 puts you in the Masters category. When you train with me, I capitalize on the assets you’ve been cultivating for over 40 years:

  • Emotional maturity and control

    • Both are very useful in endurance sports by making you better at pacing yourself.

  • Knowledge of your body

    • You know what’s working well and where your weakness are.

  • Efficiency

    • As an older athlete, you can move your body efficiently.

    Individualized Training Plan

Your plan will include structured workouts calibrated for your fitness level and schedule. We’ll prioritize recovery as well. You’ll receive your workouts in one- or two-week blocks using the Final Surge platform.

    Regular Feedback

Good coaching includes a natural and organic back-and-forth between athlete and coach. I will evaluate data from wearables if you use them. We’ll communicate as frequently as needed to keep you on track, engaged, and healthy.

    Race-day Strategy

Your training will include a comprehensive race-day plan. We’ll finalize your mental strategies, as well as your pace, nutrition, and hydration. We’ll discuss handling challenges specific to the course. And you’ll come fully prepared, mentally and physically, to the starting line.

    Post-race Review

We will celebrate what went well and what adjustments you’d like to make going forward. Ideally, you’ve had a great day! If not—because not all days are going to be great—you’ll find an empathetic ear and a partner in reviewing and renewing.
